- Born: April 5, 1588, Westport, Wiltshire
Died: December 4, 1679, Derbyshire, United Kingdom
Nationality: English
Parents: Thomas Hobbes Sr.

Beliefs: Hobbes believed that humans are naturally selfish and quick to fight. He believed that before there was government, everyone lived in a state of nature. In a state of nature everyone has the right to everything. To get what they wanted people would always be at war with each other. There would be no inventions, crops, or tools because people would be afraid of other people taking these things away from them. Hobbes also believed that a single ruler should have total power over the people, he believed that government would work best if all the power was given to one ruler.
Contradictions:Thomas Hobbes's view of human nature and view of government is very different from someone like John Locke. John Locke believed that people were born with natural rights life, liberty, and property. He also believed that we need government in order to keep peace in the states.Thomas Hobbes believed that people should live in Anarchy, this would mean that everyone would provide for themselves and there would be no government or laws which mean that there would constantly be war over inventions, crops, property etc.
