The main purpose of the Declaration of Independence was to let foreign countries know why they had chosen to separate away from Britain. The declaration of Independence was to King George the III from the thirteen colonies. The thirteen colonies where declaring that they would no longer be under British empire and be independent states. In this document they explained the reasons why they were separating from Britain, and gave King George lll all 27 reasons why. The Enlightenment philosophers were a big influence to the creation of such important documents like the Declaration of Independence. John Locke one of the Enlightenment Philosopher influenced the Declaration of Independence with his beliefs of natural rights. In the Declaration of Independence the Founding Fathers state that ”...all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (Declaration of Independence). The quote explains one of the rights the 13 colonies thought that Great Britain was robbing them from, their natural rights as Locke referred to them. John Locke also believed that government should protect the people’s natural rights and if they failed to do so they could overthrow the government. John Locke was the main philosopher that influenced the Founding Fathers who created the Declaration of Independence. Philosophers like Locke lead the 13 colonies to get rid of the Monarchy and gain their freedom and later influenced other important government documents.
